If you’re a person who cares about forests as much as you care about passing on forest lessons to younger generations, and you have free time in late September, the upcoming ‘Forest Conservation Days’ in California’s Southern Sierra may be for you.
Scheduled September 23rd – 27th at Sequoia Lakes YMCA Camp.
Over 60,000 students and adults have participated in Forest Conservation Days since its founding in 1991 by the California Society of American Foresters and other resource organizations. Rain or shine, this year’s week of numerous activities include hiking through forest and riparian zones with forest managers, hands-on learning stations, fisheries- and fire-management, forestry-career-focused discussions, local history and Native American culture.
Volunteers are needed all week for help with most activities, from initial setup on Sunday, September 23rd to breakdown on the afternoon of the 27th.
In addition to gratifying, outdoor teaching experiences and fun camaraderie with others who share your outdoor passions, volunteers will be provided with lunch every day and free camping sites or barrack housing, hot showers, and the use of a full kitchen with refrigerator and freezer. There is also a dining hall and a RV dump site at Sequoia Lakes YMCA Camp, located a few miles west of the entrance to Kings Canyon National Park on Highway 180.
