Forestry Institute for Teachers
Created in 1993 with a goal of educating educators, this program provides K-12 teachers with the knowledge, tools, and skills to effectively teach their students about forest ecology and forest resource management practices. For 2023, there will be four one-week long sessions of this award-winning program offered in Tuolumne County (Sierra Outdoor School, Sonora), Shasta County (Camp McCumber, Shingletown), Humboldt County (Cal Poly Humboldt, Arcata), and El Dorado (Blodgett Forest, Georgetown). At FIT, public agency and private forest resource specialists join environmental education specialists to share their expertise with FIT participants. Using California forests as the classroom, participants develop classroom curriculum and acquire tools which increase student understanding and appreciation of our dynamic forest ecosystems and the complex issues faced by forest managers.
The 2023 session dates will be:
- June 25 – July 1 (Tuolumne)
- July 9 – 15 (Humboldt)
- July 16 – 22 (Shasta)
- July 23 – 29 (El Dorado)
