Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Utility Forester acts as a liaison between American Tree Medics Inc (ATM Inc), utility agencies, customers, contractors and tree crews, and other agencies. The Utility Forester performs hazard and growth assessments of trees, including identification, inspection and evaluation of trees in relation to utility systems, structures, and private homes. May be required to secure rights of way from customers, and handle customer requests for pruning and removal or manage customer concerns. May be required to audit contractor work to comply with utility agency requirements. Will operate forestry computer programs and record systems. May be required to perform storm or emergency hazard assessments. Overnight travel may be required.

Duties (All Levels):

  • Patrols circuits and prescribes work to be performed by contractor.
  • Identifies dead or dying trees that may pose a hazard to utility facilities including lines, poles, structures and other infrastructure.
  • Notifies property owners of tree work to be performed relating to client specifications.
  • When necessary, obtains permits from public agencies and documents.
  • Records tree trimming or removal prescription onto designated forms/ hand-held computer or other similar systems associated to perform duties.
  • Audits tree trimming and tree removal work completed by contractors in the field to ensure compliance with work requests and approve standards and adequacy of completed work.
  • Maintain working relationships with local client personnel as well as all relevant federal, state and local governmental agencies with which it may become necessary to interact with during the course of performing their prescribed duties.
  • Conducts work in a safety-conscious manner as not to endanger themselves or others.
  • Keeps the work area (office and/or company vehicle) neat, orderly and professional in appearance.
  • Complies with all regulatory requirements and client vegetation management standards
  • Perform all necessary duties for emergency response in accordance with all safety requirements, law and regulations, and applicable labor agreements.
  • Adheres to personal appearance standards and makes a positive personal impression on others.
  • Adheres to attendance policies and conforms to work hour requirements.
  • Other duties as required.

Capabilities and Work Experience Required:

TUF Level I:

  • Ability to identify or learn to identify local trees and knowledge of growth rates.
  • Ability to learn and use company or job-specific equipment
  • Ability to learn and use computers and software systems.
  • Ability to work in rugged terrain and inclement weather.
  • Ability to read and follow maps.
  • Ability to operate a 4×4 vehicle.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate various forestry-related equipment, including but not limited to: clinometer, range finder, logger’s tape, DBH tape, and fire safety equipment.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
  • Valid California Driver’s License required.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • At least 1 year experience in tree industries or related field work preferred but not required.

TUF Level II:

  • Ability to identify local trees and knowledge of growth rates.

  • Valid California Driver’s License required and clean driving record for previous 5 years.
  • Two-year or four-year degree in forestry, GIS or related field preferred, or equivalent classroom hours and/or on-the-job experience (ISA certification meets this standard).
  • Minimum 1 year experience as a TUF I or equivalent required on a tree inspection project.
  • Ability to earn ISA certification in 3 years.
  • Forestry, fire, or utility work experience.

TUF Level III:

  • All capability and experience requirements for TUF II and:
  • Ability to identify local and non-local trees and knowledge of growth rates.
  • Four-year degree in forestry, GIS or related field preferred, or equivalent classroom hours and/or on-the- job experience (ISA certification meets this standard).
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a TUF II or equivalent on a tree inspection project required.
  • International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist certification and up-to-date CEUs, or ability to earn

ISA certification in 1 year.

TUF Level IV:

  • All capability requirements for TUF III and:
  • Four-year or master’s degree in forestry, GIS or related field preferred, or equivalent classroom hours and/or on-the-job experience (ISA certification in utility, municipal or master forestry meets this standard).
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a TUF II, or three years total as a TUF I and/or II, or equivalent, on a tree inspection project, required.
  • International Society of Arboriculture Utility or Municipal Certified Arborist certification and up-to-date

CEUs, or ability to earn utility or municipal ISA certification in 1 year.

Salary Range:

The following are minimum base salaries for each Level. Base salaries do not include merit raises, or bonus wages for project lead assignments (such as training or QC). Promotion to new levels will be calculated at the base rate for the new level and will not include merit or bonus salaries. When promoted across levels, employee salary will be determined by either the base salary or the current employee salary, whichever is higher.

TUF I: $16.00 – $19.99 per hour

TUF II: $18.00 – $20.99 per hour

TUF III: $20.00 – $24.99 per hour

TUF IV: $22.00 – $29.99 per hour

Additional Requirements and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk on uneven ground.
  • Ability to work alone, outdoors, and in inclement weather.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to extremes in temperature or weather.
  • Ability to read and follow maps.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to excessive noise.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, gas, fumes or chemicals.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as kneeling, crawling, sitting, standing, bending (waist), squatting, and climbing in rugged terrain.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
